Chemistry - Academic
1.00 Unit Wt. 1.05
PD/WK 07 Regents Exam Required
Offered in Grades 9,10,11,12
Prerequisites: Living Environment, Math A
This course contains work on: the atomic
and molecular structure of matter, bonding, the periodic table,
solubilities, ionization, acid base salt theory, redox and
electrochemistry, kinetics and equilibrium, nuclear chemistry and
organic chemistry. Laboratory work and written lab exercises
are required for the regents exam.
Chemistry - Honors
1.00 Unit Wt. 1.10
PD/WK 07 Regents Exam
Offered in Grades 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Living Environment (formerly Regents Biology) AND Math A.
Final average in each must be over 90% and department approval is
required. Students are encouraged to take the SAT II in Chemistry and the June
Chemistry Regents examinations at the completion of the course.
A rigorous chemistry course for students
who wish to major in science at the undergraduate level, this course
will focus on the mathematical aspects of chemistry by covering such
topics as: stoichiometry, kinetics, electrochemistry, thermodynamics,
and qualitative analysis. In addition, lab work will be more
sophisticated than academic chemistry. Students will be expected
to: perform titrations, calculate pH, predict reaction products and
quantities, and construct phase diagrams.
Organic chemistry will be covered in
depth as well as concepts in atomic structure, bonding, and matter and
energy. Students will have the opportunity to complete individual
and group project for competitions, such as the Duracell competition and
the NASA project. In addition, an individual project will be assigned as
a requirement of the course.
Sheltered Chemistry
1.00 Unit Wt: 1.05
PD/WK 05
This course is designed primarily for
English language learners who need an additional course in science, but
are not planning a career in science. This course focuses on the
same topics as General Chemistry. (below)
General Chemistry
1.00 Unit Wt. 1.00 PD/WK
05
Offered in Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Living Environment or Living Environment II
General chemistry is designed primarily
for those students who need an additional year of physical science. Lab
work is built into the course. Topics discussed throughout this
year-long course deal with matter and energy, phases of matter, atomic
structure and bonding, energy and chemical reactions, solutions, the
structure and properties of organic compounds, and environmental
pollution. Credit is issued upon completion of a local exam.
AP Chemistry
1.00 Unit Wt. 1.10
PD/WK 07 AP Exam Required
AP Examination fee payment required before November 1
Offered in Grade 11, 12
Prerequisite: three Regents Level Science Courses (one must be Regents
Chemistry)
A college level chemistry course
covering the following major topics: the structure of matter, kinetic
theory of gases, chemical equilibria, chemical kinetics, and the basic
concepts of thermodynamics. College level chemistry labs are
required.
