The New York State Science Honor Society (NYSSHS) is the first statewide science honor society in the country.  It was established in 1991 to encourage interest and understanding of science and science-related careers, as well as to recognize academic achievement in the study of science.

Membership in the Science Honor Society is based on exemplary character and citizenship and ongoing academic excellence.  Members annually demonstrate their science abilities in the classroom and in science-related activities in the community.  The NYSSHS thus provides activities and an environment which allows our students to further develop their knowledge of science and technology, interact with one another and encourages our talented students to help others develop an interest in science.

The NRHS Science Honor Society is composed of students with a science average of 85 or better and have completed a minimum of 1½ years of high school science.  Our members must also have an average of 75 or higher in mathematics courses.  In addition, each student must submit two faculty support statements.  At least one must be from a member of the science department.  Furthermore, students must complete one hour of service per week throughout the school year.  Service may be rendered within the NRHS science department, school and community.

In the 2005-2006 school year, our students performed a variety of service activities, such as  peer-tutoring and forming a partnership with the Huguenot Children's Library.  A group of our students spent four weeks preparing and teaching lessons about snakes to elementary school children.  This partnership generated an enthusiasm for scholarship in the New Rochelle community that we hope to continue in years to come.

The Scientific Huguenots meet every Friday in room 245 immediately after school.
