The American Medical Association has just given your class a grant to write a book about disease that will be distributed to youngsters, ages 4 to 10, both at schools and the pediatrician's office.  The purpose of these books is to explain to children the causes of disease, possible cures, and preventive measures that can be taken. 

In writing your book, keep in mind the following:

  •   Children like illustrations and pictures

  •   The scientific information must be simplified, but clearly and accurately explained.  (If you don't clearly understand it, the book will not succeed!)

  •   It can be hand-written or computer generated, but the print should be large.

  •   Two students may work on one book, but they will receive the same grade.  Keep this fact in mind when you think of working with someone.

  •   You may style your books after the Miss Frizzle Magic Schoolbus series or The Berenstain Bear series.

  •   Begin by researching your subject and make a draft of the information you would like to include in your book. 

  Following is a list of possible titles.  Should you want to do one that is not included below, have it approved first:

  6. Meet Mr. Pasteur
  7. What is a Virus and Why Can It Make Me Sick?
  8. Why Do I Run a Fever?
  9. Lose That Ooze - A Book About Allergies
  10. Take Your Medicine: The Story of How Antibiotics Work (Click on Microbiology) Try this site too.
  11. Should You Take Antibiotics for a Cold?
  12. Oops - There's a Microbe in My Soup: The Book of Food Borne Pathogens
  13. The Children's Disease Dictionary - Include at least twenty words associated with disease and show their origin.  You must include: pathogen, antigen, antibody, antibiotic, vaccination, autoimmune + 14 more.  You should include illustrations.
  14. "D" is For Disease: The Alphabet Book of Diseases.  Find a disease beginning with each letter of the alphabet and give information about them.  Include some illustrations.  (You may have trouble with a few letters.)

  23. "V" is for Virus: The Alphabet Book of Viruses. Find a disease beginning with each letter of the alphabet and give information about them.  Include some illustrations.
