Concept Maps

In a concept map, ideas are expressed as words or phrases enclosed in circles. These circles are connected by cross-links that state what the connection is between the ideas. The main idea is shown at the top of the map and is linked to several general concepts. Each general concept is in turn linked to more specific ideas and, finally, to examples. No ideas should appear more than once, and all ideas must be linked to others. Use the following steps.

  1. Identify the main ideas and general concepts to be mapped.
  2. Start your map by placing the main idea at the top of the map and drawing a circle around it. Draw lines to connect the main idea to the general concepts. You should circle each concept.
  3. Choose linking words or phrases that explain the relationship between the circled concepts.
  4. Continue to add more specific concepts and examples, circling each one and linking it to other circled words. Be sure to identify the relationships with linking words.

In class you will complete this concept map on Living Things.  Use the word bank below to help you.
