Here Comes the Latest Dictionary of Biological and English Words

In Spanish

Greek and Latin roots will help you interpret the meaning of words and biological terms.*

Assignment:

You will use a marble notebook (the same one you use for Newsworthy Articles) to keep your dictionary.  Allocate two pages for each letter (you could use less for q,x,z,etc.) and ,if possible, put tabs for easy access to the letters. Using the enclosed websites, a dictionary and/or a dictionary of Latin and Greek origins, you will create your very own Dictionary. For each of the terms, establish its root syllable(s) and definition and then write the definition of the word.

Example: dejected - thrown down. syllable: de = down

ject = throw Dictionary meaning - depressed.

Osteopathology - syllables: osteo = bone

path = disease of

ology = study of the study of diseases of the bone.**

Dictionary meaning - The study of diseases of the bone.

Your dictionary will not be complete until the end of the school year because you will be required to add words to it as we begin a new unit in biology and read a new book, story, or poem in English. Your assignment for tonight is to create your book including a page for each letter. Place the following words in it using the above format.

1. biology

7. abject

13. spermatogenesis

2. herbivore

8. avert

14. hemoglobin

3. entomology

9. discredit

15. autotroph

4. photosynthesis

10. precursor

16. hypothermia

5. carnivore

11. unprecedented

17. bioluminescence

6. lymphocyte

12. apathy

18. free choice

For each biological word ( # 1-6, 13 - 18). Find the page(s) in your textbook where it is found and write the page number and chapter title under your definition.

You will take an "open dictionary" quiz each marking period in both English and Biology.  This is your chance to really get a good grade - don't get lazy!
